Healthy Beverage Trends: Part 2!

September 10, 2017

I am SO excited, y’all.  THE Simi Botic is back on the blog!

Remember when she gave us the real deal on some trendy beverages that were really popular at the time?  It’s been about a year since then and there are a few new trends on the scene!  Well people, she is back to gie us what we need to know about what these new fun beverages actually do for you.  Also, stay tuned to the end of the post where I can give you some information about how to get more Simi in your life (which you will want by the end of this post) through the Finally Free Program.

Simi, take it away…

Hi friends! I’m so excited to be back with you chatting all things healthy beverage trends! Today, we are focusing on three Insta-popular drinks: activated charcoal, turmeric, and blue majik algae. Here are my thoughts…

Activated Charcoal

What is it: Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent material, which comes from a variety of sources (like the shells of coconuts). It has loads of little pores that can attract and absorb toxins.

Benefits: As a beverage, activated charcoal is used to absorb and remove toxins in the GI track. In a medical setting, it can be used to help treat alcohol poisoning and overdoses. It can also be used for other day-to-day purposes like tooth whitening, natural deodorizing and treating bug bites.

Love it or leave it? I’ll say “like it.” I don’t use it on a regular basis because I’ve never noticed a huge difference in how I feel when I do and it doesn’t feel necessary since our bodies are naturally designed to detox all on their own (hello, livers!). But, the morning after a fun and wine-filled night, I’ve been known to pick up an Activate Shot (activated charcoal + raw coconut water) from Native Cold Pressed on our way to brunch. Just in case my liver would appreciate some assistance.

Turmeric

What is it: Turmeric is the yellow spice and medicinal herb that makes curry the color we all recognize it for!

Benefits: Curcumin, which is in turmeric, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. But, there is only a small amount of it in turmeric. Every study I’ve read indicates that you would have to take A LOT of turmeric to receive the full benefits found in curcumin.

Love it or leave it? I LOVE it! I love the flavor and I love the color. I don’t put too much weight on its anti-inflammatory or antioxidant powers and instead enjoy it because it’s delicious! My favorite is the (hot or iced) Turmeric Mylk Latte from Alchemy Juice Bar. It’s creamy, spicy and perfect for a cozy fall day.

Blue Majik Algae

What is it: Blue majik is a proprietary extract of blue-green algae.

Benefits: It’s rich in vitamins (like B12), enzymes, minerals, and antioxidants. The nutrient-dense extract claims anti-inflammatory properties and to promote brain health. Also, have you seen its color?! I would say beautifying every beverage it touches counts as a benefit.

Love it or leave it? I love it. It is so BEAUTIFUL! I can’t help but enjoy every sip of something this pretty. While I’ve ever noticed my brain functioning at a higher level, it feels like a mermaid’s drink and that’s enough to make me order it again. Apparently, if it isn’t mixed into a nut mylk, smoothie or latte it can taste a little fishy (makes sense, as it’s basically algae) but I’ve never consumed it solo! Blended with some tropical fruit, it tastes divine.

Here’s my honest thoughts with all of these drink trends: have fun with them and decide what YOU like! I don’t think any of these are necessary for you to live a happy or healthy life, but if one tastes good to you or you love how pretty it is in an Instagram photo… then enjoy the heck out of it! I would encourage you to listen to your body when you try any food (or drink) and notice how it feels to you. If it tastes good in your mouth and feels good in your body, then it sounds like it’s a super-for-you food.

Evelyn Tribole (the co-author of Intuitive Eating) says, “If you don’t love it, don’t eat it, and if you love it, savor it.” I say we apply this awesome approach to superfood drinks, too!
